Probably you might have noticed this, it takes much longer to browse or load up files than it used to before.
The reason behind this is because the files on the hard drive or hard disk after it has been used frequently become fragmented. There are breaks or gaps of free spaces that can occur when you have installed and removed various programs on your PC. Gaps are created where these programs were once located and if you install new programs, then Windows will have decide on whether to fill the gap that is created or to continue on into other free space. Eventualy this would result in ending up with certain set of files inadvertently being installed in multiple areas of the disk, and there are empty unused spaces also left. Here's the idea ,the more you used your computer the more its disk becomes fragmented.
Consequently Windows has come up with the 'Disk Fragmenter' to help minimize fragmentation on the drive by reorganizing these files so that they stay in one location, the result file access time is decreased.
If you are using Windows Vista, disk defragmentation is usually set to automatically run on schedule. For some who use Windows XP, it is advisable to defrag your desktop on a monthly or quarterly basis depending however how often you use your PC.
For PC users who just like to browse the internet, then defragmentation is not required that often, but if you are a gamer, or you install a lot of applications and you discard them very often, then regular defragmentation is necessary.
