You may have already encountered the word virus. A lot of people know virus because their computer got infected, on the other hand, others understand it because they closely study it. But on the extreme end, few people have an understanding of it because they are the one making it and spreading it about.

In this article, I will be explaining the basic facts about virus and hopefully you will gain necessary knowledge. We will be answering questions such as; what really is a virus? What does it do? And how can we avoid being infected with one?

What is a virus?

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without the permission or knowledge of the owner. The term "virus" is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, adware and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability.

What does it do?

A virus is inactive until you execute an infected program or application OR start your computer from a disk that has infected system files. Once a virus is active, it loads into your computer's memory and may save itself to your hard drive or copies itself to applications or system files on disks you use.

Some viruses are programmed specifically to damage the data on your computer by corrupting programs, deleting files, or even erasing your entire hard drive. Many viruses do nothing more than display a message or make sounds / verbal comments at a certain time or a programming event after replicating themselves to be picked up by other users one way or another.

How can you avoid it?

Here are some pointers on how to avoid these pesky viruses. You are advised not to open e-mail attachments unless you know who it’s from and you are expecting it. You should always scan diskettes, CD’s and any other removable media before using them. You should always scan files downloaded from the Internet before using them. And ultimately, you should have a decent and up to date antivirus software.
