If you want to shop for a washing machine, the first thing that comes to mind is whether to buy a top loading washing machine or a front loading washing machine.

In the top loading washing machine the washer rollers and drums are set vertically in the machine and the agitator churns the clothes and water together in the middle making water to get through the clothes. The machine drains the water and refills it to wash again.

The front loading washing machines have the same method of washing, refilling, draining and rinsing but have more benefits over the top loaders. The greatest advantage in front loading washing machine is it is energy efficient. Nearly all models in front loaders are energy efficient approved by the US department of energy management.

Front loading is better than top loading washing machine in managing the efficient usage of water. Top loaders require more water to cover all the clothes in the drum whereas in front loaders, the drum uses gravity to drop the clothes in water every time when the drum rolls back and forth. This pushes the clothes back in to soapy water or for rinsing, thereby making the clothes clean. Since front loaders use gravity to clean clothes, there is no need for agitators to clean and this means no wear and tear of clothes, extending the clothes life a little longer. Also there is more room for dirty clothes in front loaders over top loaders.

Another advantage that I find in front loaders is the lesser drying time when compared to top loading washing machines. Since the front loading washing machines spin at 1000 rpm, it quickly drains the water and leaves very less water on the clothes. This quickly dries off. Whereas in top loaders the washing machine spins at 650 rpm which will give the clothes a longer time to dry.

When it comes to cost of the machine for both washing machines, front loaders are costlier than the top loaders. This is so because of the heavy duty motor that is used in the front loading washing machines. On the whole, for working efficiency and for safeguarding clothes, front loading washing machines seem to be better. After you buy your machine, keep me posted on which one do you prefer and why?
